Lance finished in the top four in the first Free Practice session of the United States Grand Prix weekend, before FP2 was used for a Pirelli tyre test.
Sebastian and Lance completed 48 laps between them in FP1, before an extended session allowed both drivers to get to grips with Prototype tyres to test for the 2023 season.
After the washout at Suzuka, this provided the first of two opportunities for the drivers to test new compounds of tyre by Pirelli.
This meant that the first session was the only relevant session of the day for the rest of the weekend.
For the tyre test, drivers had to complete a performance run of five laps on low fuel on a set of tyres, before adding a further eight laps on high fuel for a long run on that set.
They had to do this twice during the 90-minute session, on two different unspecified compounds, and were not permitted to use any other sets of tyres throughout FP2.
Lance
Lance started his day of running on the Hard tyre. His best effort early on was a 1.42.129, before a brief red flag was shown for an incident.
He returned to the track on the same tyres when the session resumed, and improved to a 1.39.709 to complete nine in total on the Hard tyres.
As the session entered its second half, Lance took to the circuit on the Soft tyre, and put in a very competitive time of 1.37.460 on his final flying lap on that set.
Targeting points in Texas
The United States begins Formula One's final tour of the Americas in 2022 at the Circuit of the Americas – which has become one of F1's modern icons.
For the remainder of the session, Lance returned to the Hard tyres from earlier in the session and added another eight laps on them, completing 17 in total.
Lance finished in fourth in the session, with 23 laps on the board.
After some setup changes at the start of FP2, Lance started his running on his first set of Prototype tyres.
On his first run, he put in a best time of 1.41.254, before switching to his second set of tyres.
With those, he improved to a 1.40.806, which would be his best time in the session.
For the remainder of the session, he completed his long runs on his two sets of tyres to complete the 26 laps required. His time put him in 15th position.
"It felt pretty good out there today, but tomorrow's practice session will probably give a better indication of where we stack up in this really close midfield.
"We were able to focus on both long and short runs despite the reduced running in FP1, so that was useful. But, we still have speed to find and a few things we can tweak here and there to find some performance.
"Everyone is in the same boat in terms of preparation this weekend due to the tyre test. On those tyres we ran this afternoon, it was difficult to generate heat quickly with the cooler tyre blankets."
Sebastian
Sebastian began FP1 with some time on the Hard tyre. He put in a time of 1.41.526, before a red flag halted his running.
After some time in the garage and once the session returned to green flag conditions, Sebastian took a set of Soft tyres to a 1.38.041 on his final flying lap on that set before pitting.
After that, he returned to the track on the same set of tyres for a very long run and completed 21 laps in total on them.
With 25 laps on the board in total, Sebastian ended FP1 in 10th position.
Sebastian left the garage for FP2 as the 90-minute session began, and he took to the circuit on his first set of Prototype tyres.
On the first set, he put in a best time of 1.42.603, before he switched to the other compound of tyres.
With his second set, he improved to a 1.41.857, which put him in 19th position.
He then went on to complete his long runs on his two sets of tyres with 25 minutes of the session to spare, completing the required 26 laps.
"We did a lot of laps early in FP1 and perhaps we did not catch the track at its best, but I think we got the answers we need to prepare for the rest of the weekend.
"There are some things we will adapt on the set-up, especially to improve the balance through sector one where a tailwind is making things quite tricky.
"The afternoon session was dominated by the Pirelli tyre testing. It made it difficult to learn a huge amount more, but any time in the car is always useful and we tried a few things."
