Aston Martin F1

Home sweet home. For Round 12 of the 2024 Formula One World Championship, we're taking to the track a stone's throw away from the AMR Technology Campus. Fast, flowing and full-throttle, we're at Silverstone Circuit for the British Grand Prix. Get Lance and Fernando's latest thoughts as they reflect on Sunday's action.

In front of our passionate home fans, Lance and Fernando finished P7 and P8 in the British Grand Prix.

Sunday round-up and reaction

  • Both drivers began our home Grand Prix on Medium tyres from P8 and P10, with the threat of rain looming.

  • Lance had a good start, making up a place on the opening lap.

  • On Lap 15, rain began to hit the circuit. Lance and Fernando chose not to pit during initial light rain, but when heavier rain hit, Lance came in for Intermediates at the end of Lap 26. A lap later, Fernando also pitted for Intermediates.

  • After the rain came to an end and the track began to clear up, Lance and Fernando switched back to Mediums.

  • Our drivers finished the British Grand Prix in the top ten. Lance classified P7 and Fernando P8, picking up a combined 10 points.

#18 | Lance Stroll | Race

"It was a tricky race out there today, but we managed it well and picked up a decent load of points for the team. I had a good start and got [Nico] Hulkenberg off the line. Then the rain started a few laps in and we stopped for the Intermediate tyres. It's always a challenge to judge how long you can survive on the dry compound – you don't want to leave it too late and end up in the barriers - but I think we made that call well.

"It's good to end this triple header with a more competitive weekend; it's a big uplift for the team and we'll look to take that momentum into Hungary."

#14 | Fernando Alonso | Race

"It was a good result for us today with both cars scoring points in the top 10. I felt more competitive this weekend and it seemed we were in our natural position, which is more encouraging than the last few races.

"It was a tricky race to understand, with question marks on whether to fit wet or dry tyres at certain points of the race. I think we waited one lap too late to switch to the Intermediates, but you need a bit of luck with these decisions.  It's up to us to keep improving and find more performance in the car heading into the upcoming races."

Mike Krack | Team Principal

"10 important points at our home race in Silverstone with both cars in the top eight. Lance and Fernando didn't put a wheel wrong, dealing well with a couple of rain showers that made for very tricky track conditions this afternoon. We optimised the strategy today with our decision to keep two sets of Medium tyres proving the correct one.

"The team and drivers have worked incredibly hard to improve the car recently and this result shows our efforts our moving in the right direction. A big thank you to everyone in the team for their hard work during this triple-header, and thanks to the fans and our team partners for their support during this busy home race week."

Next up

We make our way to the Hungaroring for the 2024 Hungarian Grand Prix, which takes place 19-21 July.

Saturday

  • A wet track in FP3 meant both drivers came out on Intermediate tyres. Following a brief Red Flag, they continued to gather data in the slippery conditions.

  • More rain came down before Qualifying. As a result, Lance and Fernando set their first Qualifying laps on Intermediates. The track began to clear up and a dry line appeared before the end of Q1 so, following a Red Flag, both drivers switched to Softs.

  • Our drivers successfully made it through to Q3.

  • Lance will begin our home race from P8, while Fernando lines up P10.

#18 | Lance Stroll | Qualifying

"Two cars in Q3 is a strong result for us today, especially in such tough conditions. The changes we made to the car after Austria have been beneficial and seem to have made the car easier to drive. My final flying lap was a bit messy – I think we could have managed a little more – so it's a bit frustrating but the times are super close out there. This is an uplifting result for the team and we'll try and capitalise on it tomorrow. Who knows what the British weather will bring!

"In Q1, I drove out of the pit lane just as the red light appeared. I saw it at the last moment but didn't have enough time to react. I made the decision it was safer to drive slowly around the track than slam on the brakes at the end of the pit lane."

#14 | Fernando Alonso | Qualifying

"It's good to have both cars make it into Q3 today after a few difficult Saturdays for the team. Unfortunately, we didn't complete the final lap in Q3 after some traffic on the out-lap with Carlos [Sainz] and Oscar [Piastri]. We managed to finish in the top three in Q2 and the pace was competitive, so I think there was a little more in it for us than tenth position in the end. Hopefully, we can be fighting for the points with both cars in tomorrow's race."

Mike Krack | Team Principal

"The drivers and the team did a good job to get both cars in the top ten today. It was not an easy session because the track was drying and improving with each lap. Lance had a decent final lap in Q3 to qualify in P8, while Fernando lost out trying to find some space ahead of his final run. He ended up with a bunch of cars ahead and had to settle for P10 so we did not maximise today. The AMR24 was more competitive here at Silverstone and the target is to score some points at our home race in front of our fans tomorrow."

Friday

  • Both Lance and Fernando gathered data across different tyre types throughout the practice sessions.

  • Towards the end of FP1, Lance and Fernando switched to Soft tyres.

  • After a strong lap on the Softs, Lance finished FP1 in P2. Fernando also had a promising result, classifying P6.

  • In FP2, the threat of rain resulted in Lance and Fernando completing running on the Soft compounds early in the session.

#18 | Lance Stroll | Free Practice

"We looked a bit more competitive today, but we know tomorrow and Sunday is when it counts. After Spain and Austria, we changed a few things on the car, so today was spent gathering a lot of data and getting the laps in. There’s some homework to do tonight ahead of Qualifying, but the aim will be Q3."

"It's difficult to read too much into the practice times today with the mixed conditions. The wet weather conditions have been a bit more friendly to us this season, so let's see what happens tomorrow."
