In the high-octane world of Formula One, a new contender is emerging on the track: sustainability. These are the things you need to know from 'The Sustainable Future'.
From revealing significant data storage statistics to exploring how Aston Martin Aramco Formula One Team is collaborating with its Global Data Infrastructure Partner NetApp to transform data usage and integrate sustainability initiatives into the operations of both organisations. Here are the key takeaways from 'The Sustainable Future' the latest episode from The Futurist – a documentary series exploring emerging technology – which is available to stream now on various platforms, including Amazon Prime.
1 | Each Formula One race generates terabytes of data
As Formula One looks to achieve net zero by 2030, teams are seeking ways of transforming their processes and becoming more sustainable, particularly as each Grand Prix generates terabytes of data.
NetApp's collaboration with Aston Martin Aramco means the team are supported in storing, managing and protecting their data.
Aston Martin Aramco CIO Clare Lansley: "The digital world is founded on data and lots of it. Analytics, machine learning and now, artificial intelligence, all require access to vast volumes of data but at the same time compute and storage consume a considerable amount of power. That's why teaming up with world-class partners like NetApp is proving a key enabler to achieving our sustainability goals, and giving us greater control over our data."
2 | The Formula One car will not start without data
NetApp's technology is embedded within the Aston Martin Aramco F1 garage, with devices not only used at track but also across the AMR Technology Campus, including the wind tunnel facilities. The devices travel to races alongside the cars, and without them, the cars cannot run.
The devices NetApp deploys to races function like mini data centres, and fewer devices being shipped means there's a reduction in carbon footprint.
Furthermore, these devices can be managed remotely, meaning the carbon footprint of the team is further reduced since engineers can manage them from the UK instead of travelling to races.
3 | Technology holds the potential to provide a solution
NetApp is exploring ways of making data part of the solution. By learning how to identify and extract valuable data, data can become part of the solution and organisations can better use it to their advantage – whether it's identifying emission hotspots or ensuring data is properly stored and managed so that it can be used to its full potential.
With NetApp's intelligent data infrastructure in place, Aston Martin Aramco benefits from having the capabilities to optimise the energy costs of data storage while simultaneously being able to leverage insights that improve performance on race day and keep the team on track to reach their sustainability goals.
4 | NetApp and Aston Martin Aramco are embedding sustainability into every aspect of their operations
The AMR Technology Campus is the first purpose-built F1 facility in more than 20 years. Featuring smart energy, smart insulation and solar panels, the Technology Campus has been designed with sustainability at its core.
"It's really exciting," says Clare Lansley in this episode of The Futurist. "You can combine the passion of the sport and speed and performance with actually doing something for the environment. It's a fantastic and fulfilling combination."
As part of their continuous improvement and sustainability goals, NetApp have been supporting Aston Martin Aramco with various race elements. For example, since every kilogramme of transported equipment contributes to CO2 emissions, NetApp have been working to reduce the data weights and streamline storage to increase efficiency.
Matt Watts, Chief Technology Evangelist at NetApp: "The environmental impact of data storage must be higher on any organisation's sustainability agenda and I’m proud to have participated in 'The Sustainable Future' to raise awareness about this critical issue. The role of intelligent data infrastructure cannot be overstated in the overall sustainability transition, and NetApp is ready to support every business with this journey as we progress towards critical sustainability goals."
The documentary is available for streaming from 9 September on various platforms, including Amazon Prime.
