Here's to being bold, brave and anything but ordinary. As we celebrate individuality in F1 together with our official fashion partner, BOSS, meet members of the Aston Martin Aramco Formula One Team who are igniting the power within to unlock their full potential and push the boundaries.
Garage Technician Alysha Lane, who's just a few weeks into her journey with Aston Martin Aramco, explains how bossing her own lane took her from a small town all the way to F1 and why she's decided that when it comes to owning her role, less is more...
It's essential
"I'm a garage technician. I support the mechanics to build the cars, which means everything from sorting out fuel and tyres to cleaning – and even emptying bins! It's a support role that's essential in helping the mechanics do their thing, but it's not how my F1 career began.
"I started as a waitress. I did a couple of years at another F1 team. It's like the natural next step up. I was at another team before that and had a bit of a career change from doing more of the administration side and trackside marketing but then went to garage build and the hands-on freight logistics side.
"When I started in F1, I didn't know there were roles like this in the sport. And then you go in and it's like, 'Ah, there are garage technicians.' It's quite a niche job, but you can learn on the job. I just got involved, got my forklift licence, got involved in pack downs and moved over from there."
I know what I want
"I proved a lot of people wrong there. It felt very much like an experiment, to see if it would work. It wasn't without people having opinions, but I just ignored that. The best thing someone can say to me is, 'You won't be able to do that.' And then I'm like, 'Oh, OK, it's like that is it?' I'm just really stubborn. I know what I want."
I've messed so many things up in the past, but I'd rather give something a go than not try.
Say 'no'
"I’ve only been with Aston Martin Aramco for a few weeks so there's still lots for me to learn, but I don't think you ever reach a point where you know everything. It's F1 and it's always changing.
"I love to learn, though. I get bored easily. Once I've done something, I'm like, 'What's next?' That's probably my biggest downfall. It's what got me to where I am, but it's also the thing that troubles me the most because I get somewhere and then it's, 'Right, what next?' I don't settle. I'm always looking for something.
"However, I would say that I've got better at evaluating whether I can commit to things before I do them. I've got better at not saying 'yes' to as much and better at considering that you can let other people down if you say 'yes', and then the following week, you'll be like, 'Actually, no.' I'm a lot more self-aware and I can manage it better.
"It's nice to have that balance because I get to leave the job at work and then just relax and enjoy my time now. I don't need to be chasing things. I've booked a half marathon for October. I've always got to have a little something on the side to be getting on with. I'm quite competitive at sport. I'm never the best at anything but I just like to give things a good go."
If you feel good, you'll be good
"Aston Martin Aramco has some of the best teamwear. Trackside, everyone has nice kit and it does give you a sense of pride. Everybody presents themselves really well and it's nice to work for a company that cares about its image, how it's represented to the outside world.
"Aston Martin is an iconic brand, with a great image, and it certainly was a big motivation for joining the team. If you feel good about yourself, you're always going to feel more confident and do a better job."
You have to own it
"You have to be confident. You've just got to be. I'm not very tall and if I had grown up lacking confidence, I reckon I would have been eaten alive in the real world. You just have to own it.
"I was one of two or three people from my high school who have gone and done things outside of my small town. Everyone's like, 'Oh, your job is so cool,' and it is, but I had to work really hard and sacrifice a lot of friendships and relationships to get here. I just stayed in my own lane and bossed it.
"I get a lot of things wrong, but I'd rather try. I've messed so many things up in the past, but I'd rather give something a go than not try. After all, anything can be fixed."
