This department covers the internal and external aerodynamics of our race cars. In this role you will help with the analysis of CFD and Wind Tunnel data to contribute to our aerodynamic development. You will also be responsible for creating the aerodynamic shapes to improve the flow field through high level surfacing using CATIA.

Finally, as part of the placement, you will also be present at wind tunnel tests throughout the year to further help with development.

Aero Research and Development Design

This small team of mechanical design engineers is responsible for the design and development of technology to support various aerodynamic research programmes. Currently, its scope includes:

  • Development of mechanical and electromechanical systems for wind tunnel models, including model spines, active suspension systems, steer systems and model rim design

  • Full-scale and model-scale aerodynamic test equipment, such as flow measurement rakes and probes

  • Supporting work on the new wind tunnel that is currently under development.

This is a team of specialists working on slightly longer-term projects, focused on servicing our existing research programmes and when asked bringing new capability to the Aerodynamic team.

Thermal Management

As part of the Thermal group within the Aerodynamic Development department, you will contribute to the development of the various cooling systems across the car. This role will involve optimisation of aerodynamic surfaces in CATIA, using CFD to validate performance, and analysis of track and dyno datasets to help inform development.

Performance Engineering

Aero Performance

You will be contributing to the aerodynamic analysis and optimisation of our 2024 and 2025 F1 cars. You will enhance the ways in which we visualise and interact with our data to enable robust and profound observations on their performance. Depending on your skillset, projects could vary from wind tunnel mapping optimisation to the use of machine learning to progressively improve the mathematical modelling of our F1 car at the track.

Working within Performance Engineering, you will play an active role in supporting our engineers through live events as well as with post-session analysis to offer insight into the enhancement of the car.

Performance Software

You will be contributing to the development, maintenance and support of current in-house software productions, ranging from command-line tools to desktop applications to microservices and web APIs.

Our products are used by a wide range of AMF1 Team engineers including Aero, Strategy, Simulation, Vehicle Performance and Design engineers to optimise the current car, as well as feeding into the design of the following season's car.

Working within Performance Engineering, you will play an active role in supporting our engineers during live events, as well as with post-session analysis, with the aim of swiftly providing data to our engineers to inform their decision making. Our data streams include real-time car sensor information alongside audio and video feeds.

This is a fast-paced role, and the aim will be for you to have code running during a live event within a few weeks of commencing the role.

Performance Development and Simulation

The Performance Development and Simulation group is involved in both short- and long-term car development projects, which range from pre-event simulator sessions with the race drivers to current and future car concept and design support studies with the aid of simulation and analysis tools.

Race Strategy

The successful candidate will integrate into the Race Strategy team, supporting all Formula One World Championship events and contributing towards strategic decision making across the race weekend. Day-to-day tasks include competitor analysis, development of strategy analysis tools and contributing to event optimisation and reporting.

Research and Development

In this role, you'll be responsible for testing components at the AMRTC to enhance their performance and reliability before they're put to use on the racetrack.

You'll gain exposure to a diverse array of composite and mechanical parts and systems, allowing you to develop a combination of skills in 3D CAD design, data analysis, and creative problem solving. Additionally, you'll play a vital role in the development of rigs and testing equipment as we establish our new F1 R&D facility.

This group covers the design of components related to power unit and gearbox installation, utilising both metallic and composite design for the cooling system, fuel system, several auxiliary areas and associated jig and fixtures where required.

Composite Design

Responsible for large, safety-critical portions of the car such as the nose and chassis, through to the implementation of key aerodynamically defined surfaces, including, floor, wings and engine covers, this group designs, tests and develops a wide variety of composite components and assemblies.

Working closely with engineering and production functions across AMF1 Team, the group is involved in all aspects of the creation of composite components, ranging from car component and assembly design – with complex laminate definition – to tooling and jigging to produce accurate, repeatable parts.

Garage Equipment Design

This group reports directly to the race team and is responsible for engineering bespoke garage equipment covering many aspects of the car as well as special request projects.

It also supports the development of pitstop systems, as well as the car and gearbox build departments. The CAD-based role will allow you to develop design techniques for metallic, composite and additive manufacture.

Mechanical Design

From complex metallic components and assemblies to intricate hydraulic arrangements and composite designs, this team is responsible for the design, installation and reliability of the suspension, power-assisted steering (PAS), steering column, throttle pedal and brake system including pedal, master cylinder, calipers and brake-by-wire (BBW) assemblies. Close interface with Structures, Vehicle Performance, R&D and Production are required to bring time-critical performance parts to fruition.

AMRTC
